Celebrations to mark the first anniversary of the reinstatement of Harveys beers to the Lewes Arms took place on Saturday, 26th April 2008.
Harveys made national headlines in 2007 when Greene King, the new owners of the historic Lewes Arms in Mount Place, stopped serving Harveys beer and provoked fury amongst the pub's devoted regulars. Following a four month campaign and boycott of the pub, the brewery giants capitulated to public opinion and Lewesians got their favourite pint back in April 2007.
Scores of these triumphant Harvey drinkers gathered to celebrate their moment of triumph at the Brewery with a charity relay race - the Old and Bitter Uphill Welterweight Relay.
Spurred on by a poem eloquently read by Head Brewer and Joint MD of Harveys, Miles Jenner, the blue team and the red team prepared for action. The winning team would be the first to complete the course from the Brewery to Mount Place in the fastest time - without running - having spilt the least amount of beer en route. After a good deal of dodgy practices, the blue team was declared the winner. Pints all round.
The organisers at the Lewes Arms raised around £300 (to be matched by a Harveys donation) which has gone to the Sasha Roberts Scholarship Fund. Sasha was a regular and a star of the Lewes Arms panto before she was killed in a road traffic accident in September 2006.
The Trust set up in her memory provides an annual student scholarship at the University of Kent where she was a lecturer.
