Environmental Credentials

Every industry and business today seems to want to shout about how planet friendly it is. For large firms this is 'green washing' - a marketing exercise. The fact is 'big' can never be 'green' and in all honesty no business can be perfect - only better; better than other businesses and better perhaps than it used to be.

Harveys has been independently acknowledged as among the most environmentally friendly businesses in the Country. Most recently by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), winning their medium sized Sustainable Business Award.   The greenest business between Oxford and Dover. Why? What are Harveys' greenest facets?

consider the following:

  • The use of locally grown hops and barley
  • The ground extraction of our spring water
  • The zero levels of effluent discharge into the neighbouring river
  • The tower brewery configuration maximizing gravity, minimising pumping

Even more important:

  • The return to local agriculture of all by-products, such as spent hops for mulch fertiliser or spent grains as cattle feed.  Nothing from our production process in sent to landfill.
  • Energy saving devices such as our heat exchanging paraflows which minimise the boiling of water from cold for mashing.

Most relevant to our Carbon Footprint:

  • Harveys returnable packaging:both casks and bottles are returned to the brewery for washing and reuse. Packaging Waste is almost non-existent from Harveys.
However, returnable containers are only relevant for companies that deliver locally, Otherwise the cost to return a container for reuse, (both financial and environmental) becomes too great .
Therefore:
  • Short range supply:Harveys have turned away trade if it's too far away. 80% of Harveys beer is consumed no more than 30 miles from Lewes.

There is perhaps something even more important than all of the above put together - our attitude.   Harveys genuinely cares about our community and the future.   We are by no means satisfied; we still have improvements to make.   But we are in a position to welcome carbon footprint and environmental comparison with any other business.
