Harvey’s Horses & Dray Cart
In October 2013, we were honoured to have to Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh visit the brewery. We choose this occasion to launch our new Dray Cart, working alongside Maple Leaf Carriages who provide and drive the heavy horses. We purchased our Dray Cart back in September 2013 and had a month to prepare it with Harvey’s Brewery livery in time for the Royal visit to our brewery.
Driver Adie and Groom Charlotte guided Monty and Winston, around Lewes in front of a large crowd awaiting the Queen’s arrival. The Shires were beautifully groomed and dressed in Royal colours. The Dray carried Harvey’s casks decorated with ‘God Save The Queen’ and ‘Elizabethan Ale’ on them.
The popularity of the Cart soon became apparent and we decided to embark on a contract with Maple Leaf Carriages to have our Dray tour Lewes every Tuesday. Routes normally start from the brewery and include the White Hart, Rights of Man, Brewers Arms, John Harvey Tavern, Gardener’s Arms, Snowdrop Inn and The Dorset.
Monty and Winston also starred in the launch of Lewes Late Night Shopping on 5th December 2014, alongside wine expert Olly Smith. Our Dray then went on to deliver Christmas wreaths to the local pubs and Town Hall.
New Era: 2016
Regretfully, we have now parted ways with Adie and Mapleleaf carriages. Adie provided Harveys with two years of excellent service, hard work and was a great ambassador for Harvey’s Brewery, appearing at outings such as; The Royal Visit at The Brewery, The GBBF, International Horse Show London, Airbourne Eastbourne, Eastbourne Beer Festival, London City Festival at GuildHall, plus numerous outings in towns such as Lewes, Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Haywards Heath, Hove and London.
We would like to thank Adie for all his help and wish him the very best for the future.
With regards to the future, we have teamed up with Drayhorse Shires, home to the largest selection of horse-drawn carriages in Kent. They supply Harvey’s Brewery with two black Shires called “Guinness” and “Jim” and are being driven by Steve and Nathan. They have at least 3 matching pairs of Shires, including one extremely rare white set.
Please note that all outstanding bookings will be honoured and any new bookings considered as normal. The visits around Lewes on a Tuesday will now be fortnightly rather than weekly, giving us more opportunity to visit other towns.
Our horses and dray cart deliver beer around Lewes, as well as appearing at various events throughout the year.
