Harvey’s Brewery Brings Back Brighton Bier’s South Coast IPA

Harvey’s Brewery is bringing back one of Brighton Bier’s defining beers, with the return of South Coast IPA as a limited-edition cask release this August.

The revival follows Harvey’s acquisition of the former Brighton Bier Brewery’s intangible assets last year. From the beginning, Harvey’s hoped to see South Coast IPA brewed again and, working alongside Brighton Bier founder Gary Sillence, that ambition has now become a reality.

The beer was brewed at Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes, where Gary joined Harvey's Brewers Peter Yarlett and Henry Kirk to recreate the original recipe. Brewed with Extra Pale Malt, Vienna Malt and Torrefied Wheat, before generous additions of Chinook, Columbus and Ekuanot hops, South Coast IPA returns with the bright, hop-forward character that made it such a popular Sussex beer.

Harvey's Joint Managing Director Miles Jenner said:

“The South Coast IPA recipe was devised by Gary during his early days establishing Brighton Bier and proved a great success. It is a distinctive beer style and was an iconic brand when the company was trading. For Harvey’s it is a pleasure to pay tribute to a classic beer that would otherwise have been lost. Thirty barrels will be available on cask throughout August. We were very sad to see the closure of Brighton Bier and hope this revives some fond memories.”

Gary Sillence said:

“I was super excited to brew this recipe again in the legendary Harvey’s brewery. We had to recalibrate everything, from the water chemistry to the hop additions, and I can’t wait to taste those hops jump out of the glass. Brewing it again with the team at Harvey’s feels incredible.”

Available throughout August in Harvey’s pubs and selected free trade outlets, the collaboration celebrates not only the return of a much-loved beer, but also an important chapter in Sussex brewing.

Alongside recent collaborations with Beak Brewery and The Hastings Project, the project reflects Harvey’s continued commitment to preserving brewing heritage while exploring new partnerships and beer styles.

As pledged when Harvey’s acquired the Brighton Bier brands, the brewery remains committed to reselling the intangible assets to the founders should they choose to restart the business in the future.
