Kirkstall Brewery is proud to announce they are the exclusive northern distributor for Harvey’s Brewery. Distribution of Harvey’s beers will begin with the Lewes-based brewer’s highly acclaimed and award-winning Sussex Best, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character.
Using a blend of four local hops, water filtered through the Sussex Downs over 30 years, and Harvey's unique 60 year old yeast strain, Harvey's Best Bitter is the embodiment of Sussex.
“Harvey’s is a brewery we have admired for a long time,” said Steve Holt, Kirkstall’s founder. Not only is it an exemplary brewery, Harvey’s has a deep connection to its local heritage and historic brewing practices, values that Kirkstall have in common.”
Miles Jenner, Head Brewer and Joint Managing Director of Harvey’s, explained: “It is very exciting that Kirkstall Brewery will be showcasing our beer. Although we remain an essentially local brewery, we have devotees further afield and this appetite can only be satisfied by distributors who place an emphasis on beer quality. Our yeast came from Yorkshire in the 1950s and quickly settled down to the Sussex air. We are confident that it will strike a chord on its return north.”
“We are aiming to cultivate a range of world-class beers alongside our own, to reflect the very best of what is available for our trade customers,” added Holt. “Harvey’s Sussex Best is a fitting addition to this growing range.”
Harvey’s Sussex Best is available to order from Kirkstall in 9g cask from 6th August.

ABOUT KIRKSTALL BREWERY
Kirkstall Brewery continues a legacy of brewing left by the Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey and the Kirkstall Brewery Company of 1833-1983. Kirkstall’s own beginnings as Vertical Drinks, importing the likes of Sierra Nevada, Odell and Stone since 2003, allowed them to learn from the masters before starting their own brewery in 2011.
Alongside its most famous beers, such as Virtuous Session IPA and Three Swords Extra Pale, Kirkstall also brews a series of Prize Ales exploring the brewery’s rich history, including some recipes that are over 130 years old.
Including the Taproom & Kitchen at the brewery itself, Kirkstall currently has seven award-winning pubs across Leeds and West Yorkshire, including the historic Kirkstall Bridge Inn, the Grade II-listed Cardigan Arms and The Three Swords in Horsforth.
In December 2022, Kirkstall acquired the Leeds Brewery brand. In January 2024, Kirkstall announced a new joint venture to take on the The Victoria Hotel with the team behind Whitelock’s Ale House.
In April 2024, Kirkstall reopened The Tetley building as a “landmark of Yorkshire beer culture”, showcasing the very best of beer from Leeds and the region, alongside a wealth of historic brewery artefacts from Steve Holt’s personal collection.
Kirkstall also runs a number of highly regarded and well-loved local beer festivals, including The Great Exhibition of Prize Ales, its own Oktoberfest, and has substantial involvement in organising Leeds International Beer Festival.
