The Moyleman Marathon Returns for its Fourth Year
The 18th March saw the fourth year of Harvey’s hosting the finish line of the Moyleman Marathon. The Moyleman is a very challenging and increasingly popular event run up and over the South Downs around Lewes.
In contrast to last year’s Spring like conditions, where one lively runner requested a gin and tonic at the bar, this year’s Moyleman Marathon dawned grey and freezing with a light covering of snow, whipped up by a vicious north easterly wind on the South Downs, but clear! This meant that the race could proceed despite the atrocious conditions.
Whilst runners and marshals were braving the harsh elements, volunteers and brewery staff were clearingthe brewery yard and setting up the bar. Soon everything was in place and runners crossed the finishing line for pizza, by Circa, hot drinks, by Hannah’s Van, and a well-deserved glass of ‘Moyleman Ale’ courtesy of Harvey’s. Despite facing fatigue and freezing conditions many runners and their supporters stayed and the atmosphere in the yard was amazing. Duncan Rawson, Race Director commented
“What better place to finish a tough marathon over the hills surrounding Lewes than at a Brewery. Harvey’s have supported the Moyleman since it’s conception four years ago, providing facilities and free beer for all the runners and marshals. This year they outdid everything we could have hoped for, helping all day long with the set-up and take-down. Harvey’s is part of the community that makes the Moyleman such a special event, and we are incredibly proud to be associated with Ed and his team.”
The Moyleman is in honour of Chris Moyle a Hove runner who died of stomach cancer at the age of 42. Proceeds of the Marathon go to the Martlets Hospice where Chris spent his last days.
Harvey’s are delighted to be a small part of this inspiring event. Congratulations to all participants and a special thanks to our bar staff who braved snow and sub-zero temperatures to keep the beer flowing in the open air bar.
