Step into the fascinating world of Sussex pub signs with an illustrated talk from Dr Janet Pennington, exploring the stories, symbolism and local history behind some of the county’s most recognisable inn names.
From Red Lions to Royal Oaks, pub signs have long reflected local patrons, landowners, trades, folklore and community life. Drawing on her doctoral research into Sussex pub signs and brackets, Dr Pennington will uncover the hidden meanings behind these colourful landmarks, offering a unique insight into both rural and urban Sussex history.
Harvey’s is also pleased to display a selection of historic pub signs from across our estate, alongside original concept sketches from Lewes artist Julian Bell, whose distinctive work has featured on many Harvey’s pub signs over the years.
Sussex-born Dr Janet Pennington is an independent researcher specialising in the architectural and social history of early-modern Sussex Inns and Taverns. Formerly archivist at Lancing College, she also taught Local History and Palaeography for the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sussex.
Your ticket includes a welcome drink on arrival, with a selection of Harvey’s beers available to purchase throughout the event.
We have two 2-hour sessions available, each featuring the one-hour talk with plenty of time before and after to enjoy a drink in the theatre bar.
